After the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which marked the official beginning of the American national identity, the new nation needed a history that depicted its beauty and culture and this is where the American famous painter got all the focus.

Famous African American painters
One of the leading figures of famous African American painters, Clyfford was born on November 30, 1904 in Grandin, North Dakota and later completed his education in art from Washington’s Spokane University.
And the other famous African American painters is JOSHUA JOHNSTON (l796-1824) although he is the best documented of all the eighteenth African-American artists, Joshua Johnston remains a shadowy painter at best. He was listed in the Baltimore Directory as a portrait painter from l796-1824. Following his death his works were credited to other artists. It has taken massive research for many years to uncover two dozen or more of his paintings.
