In the 18th century, it would primilarly take about one or one and half year in delivering a complete portrait to a client. A successful portrait, however, can gain the life-long gratitude of a client.

Portraiture’s roots are likely found in pre-historic times, although few of these works survive today. In the art of the ancient civilizations especially in Egypt, description of rulers and gods abound. However, most of these were done in a highly stylized fashion, and most in profile, usually on stone, metal, clay, plaster, or crystal. Egyptian portraiture placed relatively little emphasis on likeness, at least until the period of Akhenaton in the 14th century BC.

In Most early medieval portraits were donor portraits, an example being a self-portrait by the writer, mystic, scientist, illuminator, and musician Hildegard of Bingen As with contemporary coins, there was little attempt at a likeness. Portraits of donors began to be shown as present, or participate in the main sacred scenes shown, and in more private court images subjects even appeared as significant figures.

By the 1960s and 1970s, there was a revival of portraiture. English artists have produced powerful famous paintings portraits. As he didn’t have a very happy life, he majorly painted sad paintings with poor people in them. He suffered from attacks of depression due to poverty as also an unsuccessful love affair with an English girl. He divided his time between working at Brussels Academy and amongst farmers in Holland. During the last six years of his life he created some 700 sketches and 800 oil paintings. In return, he got nothing but penury and mental tensions.  His paintings were always very dark until he saw some colorful Japanese paintings. Then Van Gogh started painting happier paintings. Famous Vincent van Gogh paintings

The Starry Night is one of the famous Vincent van Gogh paintings. Vincent painted while he was in the refuge at Saint-Rémy and his behavior was very unpredictable at the time, due to the severity of his attacks. Unlike most of Van Gogh’s works, Starry Night was painted from recollection and not outdoors as was Vincent’s favorite. This may, in part, explain why the emotional impact of the work is so much more commanding than many of Van Gogh’s other works from the same period.

One of the famous van Gogh paintings was the one in which he made a self portrait with bandage on the damaged ear. One day, he decided to move to live with his brother because he got bored of living alone and he wanted to find someone to paint with. When he finally found someone, he wished he hadn’t. Van Gogh and the other artist did not get along. In a fit of mental depression, Van Gogh cut his ear.

After these things happened, he painted one more depressing painting. It was called Wheatfield with Crows. After he finished it, he shot himself.

The famous paintings of  Van Gogh includes “sunflower”, Café terrace at night, The State Lottery Office, Fisherman with Sou’wester, The Loom, A Peasant Woman in White Cap, Autumn Landscape with Four Trees, The Potato-Eaters, Still Life with Open Bible, Peasant Man and Woman Planting Potatoes, The Italian Woman etc.
