Religious Art WorkReligious art works

Religious art works were invented to exemplify the Christian principles in a form which people could actually see and touch. There has been an opposition by some people and some of them have used this religious art work as a medium of projecting their affiliation towards God. There were eras of ‘iconoclasm’ wherein Jesus’ images were made to give out the narrative life style of God. They made the images of Virgin Mary and took stories from the Old Testament. But here one notices that the images of Virgin Mary are less in the art invented by the Protestants. It is more in the art of the Roman Catholic.

Religious art works are surviving as long as the origins of Christianity and thus are believed to  be the narrations of the previous times.  Some of the oldest paintings are found from the places like Megiddo, sarcophagi, from the Catacombs of Rome which are actually tombs of ancient times that were carved with notable images. These tombs actually reveal the fact of how Jesus was depicted in that era.

After the fall off the Roman Empire t much of the European Art that had lived was these Religious art works of Christianity. The political structure of the Western Rome had fallen; their religion was still at its peak. The Roman Catholic Church took the responsibility of giving funds to the invention of Religious art works.

The main aim to fund for a religious art work was to glorify the Christian religion. In the times of the existence of the Byzantine Empire the inventions of the Christian artworks were more of abstract that was no doubt beautiful but it lost naturalism that was prevalent in the times of the Hellenic period.  The paintings were now made only to convey the religious idea. The features of color proportions and naturalistic depictions were neglected on the whole.

In the modern period there was a new perspective that rose in the 19th century that was non-sectarian. The paintings now came to be a part of collections rather than an object of worship. Generally the artists like Bouguereau and Manet who were secular artists did not use the historical concept but used only the Christian theme.
